Wooden Houses of the Mid XIX – Early XX Centuries in Small and Medium-Sized Cities of the Nizhny Novgorod Region

On the basis of a comprehensive study of the historical development of small and medium-sized cities of the Nizhny Novgorod region (former county towns and large trade-industrial villages), the article considers the architecture of wooden houses of the mid XIX – early XX centuries, which largely formed the appearance of these settlements. Analysis of the spatial composition, of the system of placing of the carved decoration, its core elements have allowed to identify the prevalence, frequency and variety of architectural forms and decorative techniques, which determined the originality of wooden architecture of the northern area, the Volga area and the southern area of the Nizhniy Novgorod region. It is established that the high aesthetic qualities of house carving, its technical features and visual motifs are inextricably linked with the rich traditions of folk art crafts of Nizhny Novgorod land – Khokhloma and Gorodets painting, Volga wooden shipbuilding, Arzamas iconostasis carving, Pavlovo locksmith production. The main centers of artistically expressive wooden buildings – Gorodets, Semenov, Kovernino, Arzamas, Pavlovo – have accumulated centuries-old traditions of local peasant architecture; active interaction of the latter with the academic architecture led to the presence in the composition and decor of the house features Baroque, Classicism, Russian style, Art Nouveau. The harmonious architectural appearance of residential buildings, their morphological and stylistic diversity indicate the high professionalism of the local carpenter’s artels. In their activities can be traced inherent folk art tradition, collectivity, the predominance of artisanal and craft technologies, which gives reason to consider the work of these artists as a kind of urban folk architecture.
